UHM MLMED Goes Hybrid in 2010!
The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa College of Education’s Master of Education Degree with a Middle Level Emphasis Program (MLMED) is going hybrid – twice over!
MLMED will be a "hybrid program" in 2 ways:
1) Classes for Oahu residents will be online except for monthly seminars in-person; all non-Oahu students will participate 100% online;
2) The program will have a combined focus on Middle and Secondary levels - so we will target ages 10-18 / grades 4-12 = SMLMED!
We are almost half-way through our first Online MLMED Cohort with about 15 Neighbor Island participants, and 25 American Samoa participants. We are finding the Elluminate interactive technology to be very user-friendly, surprisingly engaging and even personable.

Maslow Means Middle School!
The developmental stage of young adolescence (age 10-15) involves enormous change in all aspects of human functioning, with girls encountering most aspects two or more years ahead of boys (NMSA, 2003). Culture, race/ethnicity and economics contribute to great variation as well (Deering, 2005; Stevenson, 1998). Adding to the excitement, any youngster can lurch from one extreme to another in an instant – hyperactive to comatose, sweet to snarling, brilliant to brain dead.
